More Dark Skies Over Zion:

Zion National Park, September 2009

On our way from Bryce to Page, Arizona, we made a brief detour to drive through Zion (from the East entrance to the visitor center and back). While we were at the visitor center, it began to rain. After we drove back through the tunnel (which fascinated Emily; it was dark, so she kept telling us she couldn’t see), the rain stopped and the sun illuminated the rocks of Zion with a wonderful light, under some dark threatening skies.

Checkerboard Has a Different Meaning in Tennessee:

Zion National Park, September 2009

Wind and water cut perpendicular grooves into the surface of the sandstone of Checkerboard Mesa.

Angry Sunset Sky:

Grand Canyon National Park, September 2009

This was taken shortly after the photo of the double rainbow I posted earlier. As we had been eating dinner and had just left the restaurant when the skies became filled with all sorts of amazing color, I didn’t have my tripod and there wasn’t time to return to our room to fetch it. Since the light was fading fast as I attempted to capture this scene, I was forced to underexpose this quite a bit. So it isn’t in sharp focus and there is quite a bit of noise in the photo (which I have attempted to clean up). But overall I was quite taken with this moment, so I decided to post it anyway.
