In the Shade: Arches National Park, September 2001 As we were hiking to Delicate Arch, we passed a group of Bighorn Sheep taking shelter from the sun. (via Photos from Robby Edwards)
Marble House: Newport, Rhode Island, July 2001 Marble House as seen from the back lawn. Both Marble House and The Breakers were designed by famous architect Richard Morris Hunt. Marble house was built at a cost of $11 million, of which $7 million was spent on the marble from which the mansion derives its name. (via Photos from Robby Edwards)
Grand Entrance: Newport, Rhode Island, July 2001 Our second stop was to visit Marble House, which, if memory serves, was the first of the mansions to be built in Newport. (via Photos from Robby Edwards)
The Breakers: Newport, Rhode Island, July 2001 (via Robby Edwards’ Photos)
Side Entrance: Newport, Rhode Island, July 2001 The side entrance to The Breakers. My home has its share of entrances, but none of them are nearly as grand as this one. (via Robby Edwards’ Photos)

Salt Valley and the Fiery Furnace: Arches National Park, September 2001 Rachelle and I decided that we would hike out to Delicate Arch first thing to avoid the worst of the day’s heat. Along our way to the trailhead, we stopped at Panarama Point, where we had a view of Salt Valley and Fiery Furnace. Underlying the park is a salt bed deposited when this area was a vast inland sea. As the salt deposits dissolved, the sandstone which lies above it collapsed and was eroded in to rock slabs called “fins”. As wind and rain continued their work on these fins, sections of these rock walls fell away creating the remarkable formations found throughout the park. (via Robby Edwards’ Photos)
